Villa management in the Valtiberina.

The Valtiberina is the upper valley of the Tiber, in the far east of Tuscany, where the region meets Umbria and the Marche. Our estate here is Poggio alla Fame, on a hill above Sansepolcro. It sleeps 18 and also hosts weddings and events.

For owners

Running a villa in the Valtiberina.

The Valtiberina is green and much less crowded than Chianti or the Val d'Orcia. Guests who come here have usually chosen it on purpose, for the space and the views, and many come in groups: families, friends, wedding parties.

  1. Large estates

Houses here are often big, with annexes, woods and fields. Poggio alla Fame has a main villa, two annexes, a 20 metre pool and three private gates, which means more ground to keep and more systems to check.

  2. Stays and events

Poggio alla Fame takes weddings and private events as well as holiday stays, so the calendar has to fit set-up days, suppliers on site and the clean-up afterwards.

  3. Far from the big airports

Perugia airport is about an hour away and Florence nearly two. Guests need clear directions for the last stretch, and a driver if they would rather not hire a car.

What we can do for you

How we run it

We run Poggio alla Fame, events included, from our office in Torrita di Siena.

Every house has its own checklists. Cleaning, laundry, pool and garden are done by local people we know and check, and every visit ends with a photo report. Spending above the amount we agree with you waits for your approval.

The first step is a free evaluation of your house. It costs nothing and does not commit you to anything.

The area

What to do in the Valtiberina.

Piero della Francesca was born in Sansepolcro, and two of his best-known paintings are in the valley. It is also tobacco country, and you still see the brick drying sheds in the fields.

  1. Sansepolcro

Piero's Resurrection and his Madonna della Misericordia altarpiece are in the Museo Civico. On the second Sunday of September the town holds the Palio della Balestra, a crossbow contest against Gubbio.

  2. Anghiari

A walled hill town above the plain where the Battle of Anghiari was fought in 1440. Its crafts fair fills the streets in late April and early May.

  3. Monterchi

Piero's Madonna del Parto, a pregnant Virgin between two angels, hangs in its own small museum in the village.

  4. Caprese and La Verna

Michelangelo was born in Caprese in 1475. On the mountain towards the Casentino is the sanctuary of La Verna, where St Francis received the stigmata in 1224.

At the table

Chianina beef and local pork, bringoli (a thick hand-rolled pasta from Anghiari), crostini neri, pecorino with honey, and in autumn the chestnuts of Caprese Michelangelo, which have their own DOP.

Getting here

Where is the Valtiberina?

In the far east of Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo, along the upper Tiber. Sansepolcro is its main town, and Umbria starts just south of it.

Where can we see Piero della Francesca's paintings?

The Resurrection and the Madonna della Misericordia are in the Museo Civico in Sansepolcro, about 10 minutes from Poggio alla Fame. The Madonna del Parto is in Monterchi, and his frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross are in the church of San Francesco in Arezzo, about 45 minutes away.

Can Poggio alla Fame host a wedding?

Yes. The estate takes weddings and private events as well as stays. Our weddings and events page has the details and an enquiry form.

Can you manage an estate that also hosts events?

Yes. At Poggio alla Fame we run the holiday lets and the events from one calendar. If your property could do the same, we look at it during the free evaluation.
