What to do around Volterra.
Volterra was one of the main Etruscan cities, and you can still walk in through its Etruscan gate, the Porta all'Arco. Around the town the land opens into wheat fields and eroded clay, with long views towards the coast.

Volterra has worked alabaster since Etruscan times, and several workshops in the centre are open to visitors.

What makes Volterra worth a visit?
It was one of the main Etruscan cities, and you still walk in through its Etruscan gate. Inside the walls are the Guarnacci museum, a Roman theatre and a medieval centre, and it is quieter than San Gimignano.
How far is San Gimignano?
About 30 to 40 minutes by car from Volterra. From Pieve di Ponsano it is 23 km.
Can we visit an alabaster workshop?
Yes. Several workshops in the old town let visitors watch the work and buy pieces.
