The Val d'Orcia lies south of Siena, between Montalcino, Pienza and San Quirico, and the whole valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our villa here is Poggio alla Famina, in the vineyards outside Montepulciano.

For owners
Running a villa in the Val d'Orcia.
Summer demand in the Val d'Orcia is strong, and guests tend to stay longer, often a week or two. Many houses are isolated at the end of a white road, so cleaners, gardeners and the pool technician have to be planned with care: nobody passes by on the way to somewhere else.
Long stays
In season the pool is cleaned at least once a week whether guests are in or not, with a check before every arrival.
Distances
Suppliers cover long stretches of country road here. We plan their visits around the bookings, so nothing is left to the morning of an arrival.
A protected landscape
The valley is under strict landscape rules. Changes outside the house, even a pergola or a fence, can need a permit, so check with a local surveyor before ordering anything.

The area
What to do in the Val d'Orcia.
The valley was redrawn as farmland for Siena's merchants in the 14th and 15th centuries, and it has changed little since. UNESCO listed it in 2004.
Montalcino and Brunello
The hill town that gives Brunello its name, on the west side of the valley. Most of its wineries take visitors by appointment.
Sant'Antimo
A Romanesque abbey in the fields below Castelnuovo dell'Abate, south of Montalcino.
Pienza and San Quirico
Pienza was rebuilt in the 15th century by Pope Pius II, who was born there; its pecorino is sold in every shop. Near San Quirico d'Orcia is the well-known circle of cypresses on a low hill.
Hot springs
Bagno Vignoni has a pool of thermal water where the main square should be, and free hot springs in the park below it. Bagni San Filippo has more, in the woods.
At the table
Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, Orcia DOC, pecorino from Pienza, pici, cinta senese pork, honey and saffron. Most wineries do private tastings by appointment.
Getting here
Florence airport is 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 50 by car, Rome Fiumicino about 2 hours 30. You need a car here.

Why is the Val d'Orcia a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Because its landscape was redesigned in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the valley became farmland for Siena's merchants, and it has changed little since. UNESCO listed it in 2004.
Is the pool at Poggio alla Famina heated?
It can be. The infinity pool looks over the vineyards and is heated on request, at a separate charge.
How far are Montepulciano and Pienza from Poggio alla Famina?
Montepulciano is about 15 minutes by car and Pienza about 25. Cortona is about 30 minutes away.
Where can we taste Brunello?
In Montalcino and the wineries around it. Most need a booking, which we can make for you. Closer to Poggio alla Famina, Montepulciano is the home of Vino Nobile.
