The villa

A private casale on its own hilltop.

Triano is a historic private hilltop casale between Lucca and the coast. The 18x6 m infinity pool and the hot tub look out over the valley. There is a private indoor gym, the orchard has room for yoga, and walking and cycling routes start at the gate. Triano makes its own artisanal wine from the vineyards on its hillside.

Triano sleeps 10 guests across five bedrooms and four indoor bathrooms. The farmhouse has kept its stone, terracotta and exposed wood beams. The double-height living and dining spaces open onto a fully equipped kitchen, with the private gym next to it.

Outside, the 18 by 6 metre infinity pool and hot tub sit at the top of the hill, looking across the valley to wooded ridges. Around the pool there are sun loungers, a pergola, outdoor sofas and a hanging chair. The shaded portico, with a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue, is used for long meals outside with wine from Triano's own vineyards.

Triano is booked exclusively to one group at a time. From the house, Lucca is 15-20 minutes by car, Pisa and the Versilia coast 30-40 minutes, and Florence about an hour.

The pool is at the very top of the hill, and dinner is under the portico with wine from Triano's own vines.

Triano sleeps ten across five bedrooms: three double bedrooms, one twin bedroom and one bunk room. Bedroom II is next to the children's room, so parents can stay close. The house has air conditioning, and the bedrooms also have shutters and ceiling fans.

Where you are

The hills above Lucca and Pisa.

Triano sits in the Lucchese hills, above the plains of Lucca and Pisa. Around it are small hamlets, woods, vineyards, olive groves and stone farmhouses, connected by quiet country roads. The house feels rural and private, yet Lucca's historic centre is only 15 minutes away for an afternoon walk or dinner in town.

Lucca is the main town of the area. Its Renaissance walls are intact and can be walked or cycled, and inside them are piazzas, markets, independent shops and good restaurants cooking with local produce and regional wine. It is far calmer than Florence, Pisa or Siena. The hills around have cycling routes, hiking trails, small trattorias and local wineries. On the Versilia coast there are beach clubs and seafood restaurants, from Viareggio to Forte dei Marmi.

Triano is a secluded farmhouse on a hilltop, so a car is essential, both to reach the property and to get around. The roads are surfaced asphalt all the way. MANERI can book restaurants, wine tastings, private drivers, beach clubs, bike hire and day trips.

Triano is surrounded by its own vines, olive groves, fruit trees and cypresses, and the vineyard is still worked. The artisanal red wine is made here from these grapes, and guests can take a glass with them on an evening walk through the rows.

Lucca is 15-20 minutes away for dinner and the Versilia coast 30-40 minutes for a beach day. The Apuan foothills are good for walking and cycling. Florence and Pisa work as day trips, while the Cinque Terre, Chianti and Siena need a longer day.
