The Valdichiana is the wide valley between Montepulciano and Cortona, on the border with Umbria. Our office is here, in Torrita di Siena, and so is Villa Petroio, an estate for up to 20 guests in the hills of Trequanda.

For owners
Running a villa in the Valdichiana.
This is our home valley. The office is in Torrita di Siena, so for a house in the Valdichiana we are usually within half an hour's drive when something needs looking at.
Families and groups
Houses here are often large farmhouses with annexes, booked by families and groups who travel between Tuscany and Umbria. More beds means a longer changeover and more people to look after during the stay.
Farms as well as homes
Many properties have olive groves, outbuildings and land to keep, and some are run as agriturismi with their own rules. Each one gets its own checklist.
Local suppliers
The cleaners, gardeners and technicians we use most are based in the valley, so they know the roads and the houses.

The area
What to do in the Valdichiana.
The valley floor is wide and flat, farmed for wheat and sunflowers and home to the white Chianina cattle. The hill towns sit along its edges, looking across at each other.
Montepulciano
Vino Nobile cellars dug into the rock under the palaces, and a long main street that climbs to the Piazza Grande.
Cortona
An Etruscan hill town with views over the whole valley and Lake Trasimeno.
Thermal spas
Chianciano Terme and Montepulciano Terme, both a short drive from the villas.
Into Umbria
Lake Trasimeno and Perugia are easy day trips from the eastern side of the valley.
At the table
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, steak from Chianina cattle, pici all'aglione with the local giant garlic, cheeses and cured meats.
Getting here
Florence airport is about 1 hour 30 by car, Rome about 2 hours. Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station has direct trains to Florence and Rome, but you need a car for the villas.

Is the Valdichiana good for families?
Yes. The towns are close together, the roads are easy, and houses here tend to be big, with room for several families. Villa Petroio sleeps up to 20 in a main villa and two annexes.
Where can we eat Chianina steak?
The Chianina breed comes from this valley, and most trattorias here serve it as a thick T-bone, cooked rare. We can book a table for you.
How far is Montepulciano?
About 30 minutes by car from Villa Petroio, and about 15 from Torrita di Siena, where our office is.
Can I meet you in person before deciding?
Yes. Our office is in Torrita di Siena, in this valley, and we usually start with a visit to your house. Call or write and we will fix a time.
