Running a villa in Sansepolcro.
The Valtiberina is green and much less crowded than Chianti or the Val d'Orcia. Guests who come here have usually chosen it on purpose, for the space and the views, and many come in groups: families, friends, wedding parties.
Large estates
Houses here are often big, with annexes, woods and fields. Poggio alla Fame has a main villa, two annexes, a 20 metre pool and three private gates, which means more ground to keep and more systems to check.
Stays and events
Poggio alla Fame takes weddings and private events as well as holiday stays, so the calendar has to fit set-up days, suppliers on site and the clean-up afterwards.
Registering the let
Before the first guest, a let that is not run as a business has to be reported to the comune through the regional STAR portal, and the house needs its CIN. Fines run from €500 to €3,000.

What to do in Sansepolcro.
The town walls are by Buontalenti and the fortress by Giuliano da Sangallo. Buitoni opened its first pasta factory here in 1827, and tobacco for Toscano cigars is still grown on the plain.
Sansepolcro
The Museo Civico has Piero's Resurrection and his Madonna della Misericordia altarpiece, and the church of San Lorenzo has Rosso Fiorentino's Deposition of 1528. On the second Sunday of September the town holds the Palio della Balestra, a crossbow contest against Gubbio.
Anghiari
A walled hill town above the plain where the Battle of Anghiari was fought in 1440. Its crafts fair fills the streets in late April and early May.
Monterchi
Piero's Madonna del Parto, a pregnant Virgin between two angels, hangs in its own small museum in the village.
Lake Montedoglio
A reservoir on the upper Tiber, completed in 1993, with walking and cycling paths around it.
At the table
Chianina beef and local pork, bringoli (a thick hand-rolled pasta from Anghiari), crostini neri, pecorino with honey, and in autumn the chestnuts of Caprese Michelangelo, which have their own DOP.
Getting here
Perugia airport is about an hour from Poggio alla Fame and Florence airport about 1 hour 50. The nearest main railway stations are Arezzo and Perugia. You need a car.

How far is Anghiari?
About 15 minutes by car from Sansepolcro, along the straight road across the plain. Poggio alla Fame is about 10 minutes from Sansepolcro.
Where can we see Piero della Francesca's paintings?
The Resurrection and the Madonna della Misericordia are in the Museo Civico in Sansepolcro, about 10 minutes from Poggio alla Fame. The Madonna del Parto is in Monterchi, and his frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross are in the church of San Francesco in Arezzo, about 45 minutes away.
