Choose Poggio alla Famina

If you want Montepulciano and its wine cellars close by, and the whole group under one roof.

Choose Villa Petroio

If you are more than 14, or want grandparents, teenagers or a second family in a building of their own.

The area

Days out from either house.

Both villas are on the eastern edge of the Val d'Orcia, where it meets the Valdichiana. Montepulciano and Pienza are within 35 minutes of each.

  1. Montepulciano

A long Renaissance hill town with old wine cellars dug under its palaces. Vino Nobile is made in the vineyards around it, and most producers take visitors by appointment.

  2. Pienza

Rebuilt in the 15th century by Pope Pius II, who was born there. The walk along its walls looks straight over the valley, and its pecorino is sold in every shop.

  3. Montalcino and Sant'Antimo

Brunello country, on the far side of the valley, about 45 minutes from Poggio alla Famina. Below Castelnuovo dell'Abate is the Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo.

  4. Hot springs

Bagno Vignoni has a pool of thermal water where the main square should be, and free hot springs in the park below it. Bagni San Filippo has more, in the woods.

At the table

Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano, Brunello from Montalcino, pecorino from Pienza, pici, cinta senese pork. Petroio has made terracotta for centuries, and the village above Villa Petroio has a small museum about it.

Questions

Before you ask for dates.

Something we have not answered? Write to us or send a message on WhatsApp. We reply within 24 hours.

Which villa near Montepulciano sleeps 20 people?

Villa Petroio. Its seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms sleep 14 in beds, and sofa beds in the main villa and in both annexes take it to 20. One more double room can be opened for larger groups. Poggio alla Famina sleeps up to 14.

How much does a week cost?

Poggio alla Famina starts at €9,000 a week and Villa Petroio at €10,000, for the whole house. The price changes with the season and the length of the stay, and we confirm it for your dates within 24 hours. Booking with us directly, there are no platform service fees on top.

Do both villas have a private pool? Can it be heated?

Yes, each house has its own pool and no other guests use it. The infinity pool at Poggio alla Famina is open from April to October and can be heated on request, at a separate charge. The pool at Villa Petroio looks across the valley to the village.

When is the best time to stay?

Late May, June and September are warm enough for the pool and quieter than August. The grape harvest around Montepulciano is usually in September and early October. July and August fill first, so it is worth asking early for those weeks.

Do we need a car?

Yes. Both houses are in open countryside, reached by country roads. Poggio alla Famina has parking for 8 cars and Villa Petroio has gated parking, partly covered. For day trips we can book a private driver.

Can you book wine tastings or a private chef?

Yes. We arrange private visits to Vino Nobile producers in Montepulciano and Brunello producers in Montalcino, and a chef who cooks dinner at the villa or teaches the group to make pasta. A private chef booked through us costs 10% less.
